J. C. Doremus ?
Is this a tool made by Johannes Cornelis Doremus?

Just recently, December 2004, saw the following item listed on Ebay. Not only is it a beautiful piece of art, it is truly a functional tool.
Here is the discription given with the posting.

Adjustable Wood Sash Molding Plane
Occasionally, we come across a plane that is a work of art, as well as a tool. This is one. There is a user's name that partially obliterates what the maker's imprint, which could be J C Do?emus, wirth the ? coming at the split between the two halves. Looking carefully at photo where there are four images of the imprint under different lighting conditions, it is easy to see the J Do emus. The second initial does look like a C, The missing "r" could be in the split between the two halves of the plane, especailly if they were divided further when the stamp was applied.

There is a J Doremus listed in Pollak, but with a different imprint. Pollak goes on to say that, "J. Doremus was the maker of regular and coach planes in Newark, NJ." He worked in the 1830 time frame. He gives it 5 stars (fewer than 10 examples). Assuming that this is his plane, with an imprint different from that in Pollak, this is a rare find, indeed. If not, it is still a beautiful plane.
