Hendrick Doremus, LOYALIST
Property Confiscation's Bergen County
Very early on in the conflict between Great Britain and her rebellious colonies, the seizure of property belonging to persons who had aligned themselves with the Crown became commonplace.
What began as sequestration of the estates of the Loyalists soon progressed to include attainder, banishment, indictment, and outright confiscation, whereupon their effects, both property and personal possessions, were sold. The sale of this property, often at auction, brought in money for the colonies to help finance the war effort. The records of indictments, inquisitions and property confiscation's are widely scattered.
[Extract]
A list of the names of all those Persons whose property was Confiscated in the Several Counties of the State of New Jersey, for joining the Army of the King of Great Britain &c. as returned to the Auditors Office, previous to the first day of May 1787.
