ARCHER WINS BY A MILE

Dennis Archer's smashing victory over state Rep. Ed Vaughn on Tuesday won him a second term and registered one of the biggest landslides by a Detroit mayor in the 20th Century.

Archer's vote share -- above 80 percent with most of the votes counted -- approached that of Mayor Louis Miriani, who received 85 percent of the 1957 vote in defeating John Beck. Before that, the biggest winner was Frank Doremus, who in 1921 amassed 90 percent.

Header: See Doremus's Finish

The election of a republican mayor in detroit doubtless means the selection of republicans for city jobs as fast as the terms of democrats expire, and Frank E. Doremus, controller, will probably be one of those to go, unless the new mayor follows a precedent established by ex-mayor Maybury and recognizes the office as one that should be free from political dominations. Mr. Doremus has more than half his term yet to serve and will not regret retirement to private life, his ambition to conduct a successful law practice being greater than his desire for political preferment---Portland Review.

"Even the unemotional, abnormally quiet manager of western Democratic headquarters, Congressman Frank E. Doremus of Michigan---known as the "man with the 'poker face'---reflects the new Democratic optimism.
..."
"Congressman Doremus points specifically to improvemnent of Democratic chances in Colorado, North Dakota, South Dakota, and even Nebraska--- and to heavy gains in Missouri and Kentucky. He added that he felt sure of Ohio, Indiana and West Virginia. These are not boastful statements, for Doremus is not of the loud 'claim everything' type of politician. The unbiased observer gains verification of Doremus' statements in the private unpublished sentiment at Republican headquarters..."
