Fransoes (Francis) Doremus, b. 20 Aug 1787, at Montville, Morris County, N.J., (Montville was prob. a new name for Doremustown), son of Capt. Thomas C. Doremus, and his wife, Rachel Spier;

m. 1st. 24 Dec. 1808, Phoebe Smith, b. 2 Mar. 1789; d. 10 Dec. 1814, and she was bur. in St. Mark's church yard, New York City;
m.2nd., 5 Aug. 1815, Eliza DeHart Canfield, of Morris Plains, N.J., b. 28 Mar. 1791, dau. of Isaac Canfield and Margaret Caldwell, the latter being the dau. of the Rev. James Caldwell, "Fighting Parson," of Springfield, N.J.

Francis Doremus was a merchant, in New York, and had the misfortune to be burnt out twice, the second time most disastrously, in the great fire of 1835.


He served as adjutant on the staff of Col. J. Ward, in the New York militia in the War of 1812.

He was of a sweet disposition, beloved by all his family, and respected by all who knew him. He was a finely-educated man, and mingled in the first literary circles of the metropolis, counting such men as William Cullen Bryant among his intimate friends.

He d. 12 Sept. 1876, at Palisades, N.Y., she d. 3 Feb. 1866
